September to November
September to November (The main tourist area gets crowded)
This national park ensures the flower-clad Kitulo Plateau, together with areas of the previous Livingstone Forest Reserve, which runs south from the plateau paralleling the Lake Nyasa shoreline. The region, quite a bit of which lies somewhere in the range of 2600m and 3000m in the highlands northeast of Tukuyu, is a heaven for hikers, in spite of the fact that tourism infrastructure is minimal.
The park achieves its prime during the rainy season from December until April, when it detonates in a bounty of color, with orchids (more than 40 species have been distinguished up until now), irises, aloes, geraniums and a lot more flowers covering its grassy expanses. Orchids are at their peak in February. Look out too for zebra, which have been reintroduced here, and the rare and recently discovered kipunji monkey, with its long coat and ‘blare bark’ call.
Ascending from the plateau is Mt Mtorwi (2961m), which is 1m higher than Mt Rungwe and southern Tanzania’s most astounding peak.
